Air scatters blue light much more than red (Rayleigh scattering grows with the inverse fourth power of wavelength), so the blue part of sunlight is redirected across the whole sky. Violet is scattered even more, but sunlight carries less of it and our eyes are less sensitive to it, which is why the sky reads blue rather than purple.
